many years back (well over 15 years ago) a took a pottery class, both in university and had a chance to play with clay when I was a kid.
I LOVED it but never did anything with it. I liked hand building and coiling and slabs and painting but I LOVED throwing on the wheel. It was challenging, relaxing, meditative, frustrating and endlessly rewarding.
Then I got a job, built a career, bot married, had kids, and didn't think much about it.
Recently, being stuck at home during Covid-19 and trying to figure out what to do with my time and how to occupy my 4 year old - plus having a bit of space in the basement, I decided to set up a small pottery workshop and see if I can't revive a hobby that was so much fun when I was younger.
This means I had to do EVERYTHING from scratch, from picking a wheel, remembering how to select clay, throw pots, figure out where and how to fire and so on.
The most challenging bit was I had to do it on a BUDGET. My wife gave me a $300 budget to get this all up and running - so there in lies the challenge. How do you set up a pottery, get everything you need and remember how to pick it all back up?
I figure I am not the only one who might be in this boat nor the only one trying to figure out creative and productive ways to engage my at home kiddos (my second little dude is almost 2 y/o - a bit young to throw but not too young to get dirty)
I also figured if we document this on videos and photos, we might help folks trying to do the same thing, as well as get valuable advice from much more experienced potters. We are gonna need all the help we can get!!!
